Why do drivers slow down on a cool-down lap?
Drivers reduce their pace after a fast lap to manage tyres, brakes and other car systems before another push lap. In qualifying, the lap can also be used to manage energy and create space to other cars.
Is a cool-down lap still recorded as a lap time?
A lap time can still be recorded when the car completes the lap normally, but because the driver is not attempting a competitive time it is generally much slower than a push lap.
