F1 Tyre Guide

Compounds, stints and the changing track

An F1 tyre is not simply a black circle. It is the car’s only contact with the track, so its condition shapes braking, traction, cornering and strategy.

This guide explains what the coloured tyres mean, why the same tyre can behave differently during a race, and what to watch before a pit-stop decision makes sense.

Why tyres decide so much

Every steering, braking and acceleration input reaches the road through four contact patches.

The tyre must turn braking force into deceleration without losing control.

It supports the car while lateral load builds through a corner.

It transfers power to the surface as the driver accelerates away.

Its behaviour tells the driver and team how the car and track are changing.

That is why tyre management is not a separate task from driving. It is part of every lap.

Reading the dry-compound rangeC1 → C5

Pirelli’s dry range is labelled C1 to C5. It is a relative spectrum: moving toward C1 generally prioritises durability, while moving toward C5 generally prioritises immediate grip. It is not a universal lap-time ranking.

Think of C1–C5 as the available palette, not the tyre names that appear on the race broadcast.

From C1–C5 to Hard, Medium and Soft

The tyre colour tells you a role for this Grand Prix, not a fixed compound number for every round.

Do not read a colour alone as a guaranteed pace or lifespan. The circuit, car, track evolution and driving phase change the result.

When the track is wet

Slick tyres are made for a dry surface. When water prevents that contact, the task changes from maximising dry grip to managing water and keeping control.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Formula 1 cars use different tyre compounds?

Different compounds offer different balances of immediate grip, warm-up behaviour and how long performance can be maintained. Teams choose between these trade-offs for the circuit, weather and race plan.

Is C1 always the Hard tyre and C5 always the Soft tyre?

C1 to C5 describe positions within Pirelli’s dry-compound range. For each Grand Prix, three selected compounds are assigned the race roles Hard, Medium and Soft, so the colour role is what viewers compare during that weekend.

When is an Intermediate tyre used?

It is for a wet or drying track when the conditions are too damp for slick tyres but do not call for the deepest-grooved wet tyre. The correct choice depends on standing water, rainfall and how quickly the circuit is drying.

What is tyre degradation in Formula 1?

It means a tyre’s performance changes over a run. Drivers and teams monitor lap-time trend, balance and wear rather than treating one visual sign as a complete diagnosis.

Does a pit stop always make a tyre strategy better?

No. Fresh tyres can offer an advantage, but a pit stop also costs track position and can place a driver in traffic. Teams weigh tyre condition, the gap to rivals, traffic, weather and the remaining race distance.
