Paddle shifters are controls mounted behind the steering wheel that allow the driver to change gears with their fingers. Connected to F1's semi-automatic gearbox, they enable very rapid shifts without the driver taking their hands off the wheel. One paddle is generally used for upshifts and the other for downshifts.
