This refers to the act of leaving the designated track course to cut across a corner as a shortcut. It commonly occurs in chicane (S-shaped corner) sections, and if it is determined that an unfair advantage was gained, such as overtaking the car ahead or reducing lap time through the shortcut, a time penalty or an instruction to relinquish position may be imposed.
