In the first qualifying session (Q1), any driver who records a time exceeding 107% of the fastest time is not permitted to participate in the race. This rule was introduced to prevent excessively slow cars from posing a safety risk to other drivers. However, if a driver can demonstrate sufficiently fast times during practice sessions, they may be granted an exceptional entry into the race at the stewards' discretion.

Does failing the 107% rule automatically prevent a driver from racing?
Not necessarily. Under the 2026 regulations, a driver eliminated in Q1 whose best lap exceeds 107% of the fastest Q1 time is normally unclassified, but the stewards determine further participation and may exceptionally permit the driver to compete after considering relevant factors.
Does the 107% rule apply when qualifying is wet?
Under the 2026 regulations, the Q1 107% unclassified provision does not apply when the track has been declared wet by the Race Director.
