2021 Italian GP — Titanium Halo Saves Hamilton in Monza Collision

At Monza's Turn 1-2 chicane, title rivals Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton collided, launching Verstappen's Red Bull airborne on top of the Mercedes cockpit. The Red Bull's rear wheel landed directly above Hamilton's helmet, but the titanium Halo structure absorbed the massive load, preventing catastrophic head injury.

The Halo was introduced to protect a driver's head from other cars, tyres and debris. Its strong structure above the cockpit reduces the risk of large objects directly striking the driver.
Does the Halo obstruct the driver's view?
The central pillar is visible in the driver's field of view, but the two eyes provide overlapping visual information and drivers can adapt to it. In F1, the head-protection benefit is considered far more important than the limited effect on visibility.
